PLATINUM, ONYX, AND DIAMOND LIGHTER

PLATINUM, ONYX, AND DIAMOND LIGHTER

Cartier, c. 1930

As smoking gained popularity in the early 20th century, so too did the demand for refined accessories. Cartier, a leader in Art Deco design, elevated these objects with signature precision and elegance. This compact platinum lighter, measuring just two inches, is accented with onyx plaques and a baguette-cut diamond push mechanism. It opens like a miniature book to reveal an enameled crown and an inscription commemorating CHRISTMAS 1930, opposite its lighter fluid chamber—a rare fusion of function and festivity.

Craftsmanship

This Cartier platinum, onyx, enamel, and diamond lighter, circa 1930, reflects the maison’s mastery in integrating mechanical innovation with elegant design. Of rectangular form and weighing 91.6 grams, it features onyx plaques at the top and base and a baguette-cut diamond push button. Opening to reveal a platinum cover enameled with a red and gold ducal coronet above the inscription CHRISTMAS 1930, the piece hints at noble provenance. It measures 2 x 1¼ x ½ inches, is signed Cartier Paris, and marked Made in France, Stone, Benzin, with the French platinum assay mark. Accompanied by its original Cartier fitted box. Reference no. P-4635.
