With clients like Marlene Dietrich, Greta Garbo, and Joan Crawford, Paul Flato earned his title as “Jeweler to the Stars.” A pioneer of 20th-century American jewelry, the Texas-born designer was known for bold statement pieces featuring large gemstones. His collaboration with a young Harry Winston on a necklace for the 125.65-carat Jonker diamond—one of the century’s most celebrated gems—further cemented his status in the jewelry world. This platinum bracelet centers on a luminous, hexagonal cabochon emerald—roughly 200 carats—with a carved floral motif, framed by diamonds in a “cobblestone” setting. Shortly after creating it, Flato opened a Sunset Boulevard boutique, drawn west by his celebrity clientele. Following a fall from grace in 1943 over a financial scandal, he reinvented himself designing equally striking makeup compacts.
